Dinnington 44
DINNINGTON recorded only their second victory away to Huddersfield as they began their league campaign with an impressive victory.
Dinnington started the game warily but they comfortably held their own in the opening quarter, miss
ing two penalty attempts in that time.
Then they hit Huddersfield with two tries in quick succession to take control of the game.
A lovely run by Tyle Stimpson broke the home defence and, using the winger as a decoy, he was able to run in behind the posts giving Darren Cannadine an easy conversion.
From the re-start Paul Mitchell reclaimed the ball and, by moving it quickly out along the backs, it set up Stimpson for his second try and Cannadine’s second conversion.
With their confidence now on a high Dinnington began to dominate a big home pack and, after pushing them off the ball at a scrum, they set up Sam Rodgers to extend the lead to 19-0 at the break.
Within five minutes of the re-start Ian Spink broke down the wing to open up the way for Iam Midgley to score.
Dean Lax landed a couple of long range penalties to put Dinnington 30-0 ahead and then a break by Lax, from his own twenty-two, followed by a cross-field kick enabled Stimpson to claim his third try of the game.
Cannadine added the conversion and he was on target again after Dinnington produced their best bit of rugby of the game to put Andy Hopkin over.
Dinnington completely dominated the game to such an extent that Huddersfield rarely threatened their twenty-two, never mind their line, and so it was a bit of a disappointment when they let the home side score an unconverted try late on.
Tomorrow, Dinnington are at present without a fixture. They start their home league games against Castleford next week (27th).

A MISSED conversion with the last kick of the game prevented Dinnington from snatching victory over Huddersfield.
Dinnington’s play was much improved in all areas from the previous week but they stood too far off their opponents in the first half and never really got into the game.
Huddersfield scored a converted try to lead 7-0 at the break and an unconverted try early in the second half moved them 12-0 ahead.
Dinnington then found their form and when Tom Yeoman went in for a try, converted by Mick Yeend, they started to play and raised their competitiveness.
They were caught out when Huddersfield scored to go 19-12 ahead but regained the initiative to put in a strong finish.
Yeend scored and converted a try to cut the deficit to five points before Dinnington set up camp in the visitors’ twenty-two.
Despite applying a lot of pressure they could find no way through but repeated infringing by Huddersfield brought the inevitable penalty try with only seconds to go.
The conversion would have given Dinnington an unlikely victory but the ball passed under rather than over the bar.
