A CAMPAIGNING congregation in Laughton has received the go-ahead to replace its church's condemned heating system - damaged after vandalism last year.

Work will start on Monday 6th October at All Saints Church, on the High Street, and will take between two and three weeks to complete.

And with the winter months now fast approaching, the news comes as a great comfort to the C of E churchgoers who were stuck with patio heaters during services earlier this year.

"Members of the congregation and friends of All Saints have been busy for over a year raising funds to replacing the old gas heaters," said Joyce Equeall, chairman of the Heating Emergency Action Team (HEAT).

"It will be replaced by two new gas boilers and ample radiators to ensure the church is once again a place to enjoy being in. Church members will not have to suffer another freezing cold winter at church services."

"On some occasions the outside temperature was warmer than inside the church."

Events have taken place throughout the year, including a Blue Moon concert which raised almost £400.

"Everyone enjoyed the night and many wanted to know when we were putting on another one," said Joyce. "And our autumn tea and craft fair was well-attended and raised more than £550."

"We are well on the way to our overall target of £45,000, and after the success of our last two fund raising events we are confident we shall reach our target."

"A big thank you to everyone who has helped us to get our heating working again, we look forward to welcoming you to our church in the future."

The fundraising efforts continue - keep reading the Guardian for updates.
