FIREFIGHTERS arrived in time to prevent a church burning to the ground on Friday night.

Heat from a nearby rubbish fire – thought to have been started deliberately – spread to the roof of Dinnington Methodist Church at about 11pm.

Aston Park and Maltby crews fought the blaze for over an hour, preventing more extensive damage to the Laughton Road building.

"Initially, it was a call to a fire in an open area," said watch manager Pete Maloney from Aston Park. "Then when we were en route to the incident, we were told it had spread to the church roof."

"It was a pile of refuse that had been badly stored by a shopkeeper. Some persons had set fire to it, and then it had spread to the timber and fascias on the church."

He added: "On arrival, it was clearly more serious than we had first thought. But it could have been much worse."

South Yorkshire Police confirmed the incident was being investigated.
