Aston supermarket staff in charity trek bid

STAFF at Aston's Somerfield petrol station are donning their walking boots on Saturday to raise cash for a charity close to their hearts.
Workers from the Worksop Road store are setting off to complete a 70 mile trek all the way to Skegness to raise money for Parkinson's sufferers.
"There is a gentleman who works for us who was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease four months ago," said store manager, John Marsh. "He's like a father to all the members of staff and just looks out for everybody. We wanted to do it to show our support for him."
Somerfield staff have already been raising money for Macmillan this year but have decided to add this extra charity event in aid of their colleague.
Mr Marsh said they were inspired to attempt the marathon hike by colleague Wendy Farshaw who has completed it three times before.
"We just thought if Wendy can do it then we can too," said Mr Marsh. "We're quite serious about the whole thing. We're all soaking our feet in surgical spirit to make our feet harder."
"I have been training doing a 20 mile walk a week and a 30 mile bike ride a week too. And I do four miles on the crosstrainer every evening."
Customer services assistant, Mrs Farshaw, who came up with the idea, said she is looking forward to attempting the challenge again.
"You just have to walk for 24 hours straight," she said. "We will have a minibus on standby going along in front of us with first aiders in case people need a stop. And we'll have energy food like bananas and Mars bars to eat on the way."
"We will also be carrying collection buckets on the way up there and welcome any donations from customers."
Anyone who would like to support the staff with a donation can visit the store on Worksop Road or call on 0114 287 6138.
